It is important that the teacher takes time to discuss the sound differences in English and Spanish and make aware that student confusion of language is understandable. Differentiated instruction in small groups is best for English Language Learners (ELL). The students in this stage often refer to their knowledge of the alphabet to find a letter name that is closest to the place of articulation of the short vowel they are trying to write. We use the Primary Spelling Inventory (PSI) for 2nd grade. The invented spelling comes from students relying on the names of letters and how the sound of the letters feels in their mouth. The first step in implementing Words Their way is giving the class a (rather lengthy) spelling test. When writing, students at this stage can usually read what they write even though they still use invented spelling. Students in the stage have a concept of word which means that they can track with their finger while reading. Sight words are memorized for a more complete reading fluency. During this stage, students learn sight words. By the end of the stage, students have attained full phonemic awareness. At the beginning of this stage, students only represent the beginning and final consonant sounds. After a spelling inventory is performed, students are then placed in an early, middle, or late spelling stage. Letter Name-Alphabetic Stage is the second stage of literacy development.
